How American Liberators disrupted Japanese supply lines and pioneered innovative bombing tactics in the China-Burma-India Theater
Formation and Mission
In late 1943, the Allies established a unified command structure for Southeast Asia. Air Marshal Sir Richard Peirse headed Air Command Southeast Asia, with Major General Stratemeyer commanding the Eastern Air Command. This reorganization created the Strategic Air Force, activated December 15, 1943, uniting USAAF and RAF heavy bombers under a single command for the first time. The 7th Bomb Group (B-24 Liberators) was joined with RAF Wellington and Liberator squadrons to form this force.
The Strategic Air Force’s primary mission was disrupting Japanese supply lines to Burma. Japanese shipping held the top priority, followed by rail communications from Thailand and Malaya, then airfield targets, and finally military installations.
Early Operations and Crew Challenges
When the Japanese shifted supply routes away from Rangoon toward smaller southern ports and Gulf of Siam anchorages in response to bombing, the Strategic Air Force expanded mining operations and shipping strikes. The group conducted extended night missions, sometimes lasting 15 hours or more, flying from India at low altitudes (300 feet) over open water.
During early 1944, the 7th BG faced severe crew shortages. Replacement losses and personnel rotations left some squadrons with only seven available crews, limiting group missions to 16-18 B-24s. By May, replacement crews began arriving, allowing units to rebuild toward full strength by mid-year.
Shifting Priorities and Japanese Resistance
As RAF Spitfires gained air superiority over Burma’s frontlines, the Liberators shifted toward low-altitude railway attacks. Standard bombs simply bounced off tracks at low level, so the Tenth Air Force developed three-foot steel spikes attached to bomb noses to penetrate the rails. This innovation proved highly effective.
Defensive operations against Japanese airfields occurred through February and March using small night raids. While Japanese fighters made occasional interceptions—the 204th Sentai claimed two RAF Liberators on February 29, 1944—losses remained minimal during these early operations.
Ground Support and Monsoon Transition
As the 14th Army launched offensives into Burma, the 7th BG increasingly supported ground operations, bombing supply dumps and troop concentrations across a wide area. These missions continued until June when monsoon weather disrupted operations.
On June 13, 1944, the group received orders to cease bombing and convert to fuel transport over the “Hump” to China, supporting the Fourteenth Air Force against the Ichi-Go offensive. This unexpected shift proved unpopular with crews, especially bombardiers who were grounded. The B-24s were stripped of ball turrets and fitted with three 420-gallon bomb-bay tanks, increasing gross weight to 70,000 pounds—well above specifications. Pilots employed unconventional takeoff procedures, “gently easing back on the control column and hoping the SOB would fly,” according to Bradley Hamlett’s postwar memoir.
The fuel-hauling missions ran from June 20 through September 30, 1944. Aircraft were lost regularly to weather, mechanical failure, and overloaded takeoff crashes—the 492nd Squadron suffered most heavily with six losses. The group transported over 2,000,000 gallons of fuel despite these challenges.
Return to Bombing and Bridge Campaigns
After intensive refresher training in October, the 7th BG resumed bombing operations. The first mission on October 19 targeted Moulmein docks in cooperation with RAF Liberators. A second strike on October 22 proved costlier when Ki-43 fighters from the 64th Sentai attacked the 493rd Squadron formation. Two collisions between damaged B-24s resulted in four aircraft lost with no survivors.
From January to April 1945, bridge-busting became the group’s specialty. Historical analysis showed B-24s achieved only one direct hit per 81 sorties on bridges, necessitating new tactics. Medium and low-level attacks replaced high-altitude bombing, but results remained inconsistent until innovations emerged.
The Ban Dara Bridge fell on November 1, 1944, when Lieutenant Nemecek of the 436th Squadron scored three direct hits at 300 feet. However, the infamous Bridge 277 (spanning the River Kwai) resisted numerous attacks before finally falling on February 13, 1945, using low-level techniques.
Game-Changing Weapons and Techniques
The introduction of Azon bombs—1000-pound weapons with radio-controlled tail fins allowing post-release maneuvers—transformed bridge-busting effectiveness. Ten equipped B-24s joined the 7th BG in autumn 1944, eventually concentrating with the 493rd Squadron. These bombs proved ideal for narrow Burma-Thailand railway structures.
In April 1945, Colonel Harvey Alness introduced glide-bombing techniques, adapted from successful B-25 tactics. Pilots approached targets along bridge axes, beginning glides at 1,500 feet and releasing bombs at 500 feet with a sharp pull-up. The 9th, 436th, and 492nd Squadrons trained extensively on mock 200-foot bridge targets.
The April 24 mission demonstrated spectacular results: 41 aircraft destroyed at least 30 bridges and damaged 18 others, with virtually every pilot achieving direct results. By this point, the 7th BG had already destroyed 98 bridges using conventional methods.
Impact and Final Operations
The Strategic Air Force’s cumulative bombing campaign severely constrained Japanese logistics. Allied intelligence estimated the Japanese Army required 490 tons of supplies daily, plus 110 tons for air units. By early 1945, the combined 7th BG and RAF Liberator efforts reduced daily rail tonnage into Burma to less than 150 tons.
Following Rangoon’s capture in May, the Eastern Air Command dissolved and Tenth Air Force units prepared to move to China. The 493rd Squadron remained to drop propaganda leaflets across Thailand from June to August, flying unopposed over Bangkok and 17 Thai towns during its final mission on September 3.
